Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner responsible for Jobs and Social rights, the guest of honor of Cercle des Européens

The guest of honor of the videoconference organized by Cercle des Européens on January 29, 2021, was Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner responsible for Jobs and Social rights.

Few European Commissioners participated, like Nicolas Schmit in the negotiations on all European treaties as a diplomat or Minister. Nicolas Schmit has been active in the Council of the EU as Minister of Luxembourg for 15 years between 2004 and 2019. He was also a member of the European Parliament in 2019. He is serving as European Commissioner since 2019.

During his presentation, Nicolas Schmit underlined the crucial turning point experienced by all Europeans in the context of the pandemic crisis which requires the response from the European Commission. This crisis emphasis the urgence for changes in four main areas:

1. Budgetary rectitude needs to be reviewed on a long-term basis even though public financial management is not possible without rules either;
2. European industrial policy and financial commitment that it requires have become a perfectly acceptable and even urgent objective;
3. Education, especially of young generations, is the main priority since it would allow them to prepare for mobility, acquire necessary skills and become players in tomorrow's economy;
4. A social dimension of Europe which implies the creation of the basic core of social rights, the regulation of platform workers and a discussion on new forms of working is also important.

Nicolas Schmit concluded by mentioning the question of human and ethical values, the need to prevent the deepening of inequalities and the question of democratic values and the risks of populism that weigh on democracies.
