CONFERENCE: Women's commitment to justice - "Women's Figures" series

Noëlle Lenoir was invited to participate in a conference held on June 13, 2022 highlighting women in the judiciary, organized by Gwenola Joly-Coz, first president of the Court of Appeal of Poitiers, and the Court of Cassation.

For centuries, justice was only rendered by men. It took many debates throughout the 19th and 20th centuries for women to finally have access to the right to judge. It was finally the law of April 11, 1946 that opened the possibility for "both sexes" to accede to the judiciary. The proposed cycle at the Court of Cassation will open on the 76th anniversary of this text which allowed the greatest sociological change that the body has known.

Yet women remain invisible. The names of the pioneers are forgotten, their careers unknown. Their memory fades for lack of institutional memory, of images, of traces.

An event is what it becomes. The entry of the first woman into the judiciary can only become a milestone if it is transmitted through stories. The three proposed conferences will recall the history of the first women who entered the judiciary, then tell the story of those who committed themselves to justice and its evolution, and finally show that they have taken, over the decades, positions of responsibility in support of the functioning of the institution.

All these "firsts", who have opened up gaps, cleared territories, and made their way through their careers. Women who dare for the first time, take steps for all the others.

The conference is available for replay at this link.
