Human rights and pandemic

Opinion from Noëlle Lenoir

Thirty years ago, I became totally involved in bioethics, a young discipline whose purpose is to protect human dignity in the face of scientific advances which, particularly with genetic engineering, can turn against humanity. However, genetics has proved not to be a danger, but on the contrary a fantastic tool in the service of public health, as we can see with messenger RNA vaccines to prevent Covid 19 contaminations. This is not how some groups in rich countries understand it, and they are protesting against these scientific advances that they consider to be an attack on their freedoms. This type of reaction is a mortal danger to democracy, which is based on the trust in the legitimacy of the political institutions appointed to manage and do the good of the population. It is this trust that is the key to the solidarity without which there can be no living together. Europe is best placed to reflect on solutions, given its credo and the universal values on which it was founded with the aim of reconciliation between the peoples of Europe.
